NURS 6053 Personal Leadership Philosophy, Core Values, and Personal Mission/Vision Statement
NURS 6053 PERSONAL LEADERSHIP PHILOSOPHIES
Nurse leaders practice behaviors that illustrate their personal leadership philosophy based on their characteristics and core values. Leadership philosophy offers and shapes how a leader relates with various stakeholders and guides their conduct and beliefs. A nurse leader’s philosophy does not just reflect their behaviors but also their mission statement (Cummings et al., 2021). The purpose of this paper is to discuss my leadership philosophy based on the characteristics of a good leader using scholarly sources and the analysis of my CliftonStrengths Assessment.
Personal Leadership Philosophy, Core Values, and Personal Mission/Vision Statement
My leadership philosophy focuses on serving rather than being served and engaging all to generate better innovative ideas to advance the best care to patients irrespective of their diversity. My core values include integrity, transparency, accountability, and respect. I believe that leaders should respect their position, and demonstrate the greatest levels of transparency and accountability through engaging and involving all stakeholders, especially in their teams. As a leader, being transparent implies readiness to role model the best attributes and practices, particularly in nursing when handling diverse patients and their families (Algunmeeyn et al., 2023). Ethical principles that guide behaviors implore leaders to be role model and practice what they preach.
My vision and mission statement are intertwined with my core beliefs and values. My mission is to serve patients and their families, making their healthcare a priority and building a team to attain this goal. My vision is to make healthcare accessible and affordable for all irrespective of their diversity. Leaders should model caring leadership as advanced by Zhang et al. (2022). Nurse leaders who practice a caring approach are benevolent to others, respect and appreciate diversity and distinctiveness, and facilitate self-actualization while maintaining mutual benefits and motivating others due to their charisma.
Analysis of Clifton Strengths Assessment
The results from the Clifton Strengths assessment show five core strengths strategic, responsibility, belief, ideation, and futuristic. The strategic theme implies getting the best outcomes in all situations. The responsibility theme implies that I take ownership of anything I commit to and feel bound to follow to its completion (Faville et al., 2020). The belief theme implies that my core values are enduring like being altruistic, spiritual, high-ethics, and responsibility. The ideation means that I am fascinated by ideas while futuristic implies imagining and seeking a brighter future.
Having strengths as illustrated in the Clifton Strengths assessment does not imply that one possesses all virtues and behaviors for better conduct. Consequently, the two behaviors that I would strengthen include being responsible and better interactions with people, especially patients and colleagues in the practice setting. As asserted by Frangieh et al. (2023), nurse leaders can thrive at work and positively impact staff, patient care, and organization. For instance, a positive psychological state happens when nurse leaders have a sense of vitality and learning. Therefore, I will learn more about responsible conduct and interactive aspects with people. Emotionally intelligent leaders understand and manage their emotions and empathize with the emotions of others. Therefore, responsibility implores nurse leaders to role model and be examples to subordinates.
Development Plan in Improving Selected Key Behaviors to Achieve Personal Vision
Improving the selected key behaviors requires an effective plan that entails two strategies. The initial strategy is to get feedback from colleagues and mentors aimed at determining my weak areas. Self-awareness is a critical aspect of an effective nurse leader as it helps determine gaps and seek strategies to correct them (Välimäki et al., 2024). I will enroll in self-awareness sessions, especially through virtual classes and even watching tutorials on YouTube and TED talks. Interacting with others will entail changing my perspective and seeking better ways to mingle and get viewpoints from others. Active listening through engaging in conversations will also improve the identified behaviors to attain my vision.
Conclusion
Nurse leaders should have personal leadership philosophies to guide their practice and interactions with patients, staff, and other stakeholders. The core values, vision, and mission statements are essential for nurse leaders to attain the goal of set philosophies. Improving certain behaviors based on strengths assessment tests like the Clifton Strengths Assessment Tool enables nu
